Book description: Catalina Martín desperately needs a date to her sister’s wedding. Especially since her little white lie about her American boyfriend has spiralled out of control. She’d rather refuse; never has there been a more aggravating, blood-boiling, and insufferable man. But Catalina is desperate, and as the wedding draws nearer, Aaron looks like her best option. And she begins to realize he might not be as terrible in the real world as he is at the office.
So, what did I think about this book?
I’m quite a bit behind on the blog after accumulating travel preparations and the travels themselves over the last few weeks. Among my latest reads is Elena Armas’ debut novel. I’d heard both very good and mixed reviews of this bestseller, but I wanted to make up my own mind about it for the author’s visit to Barcelona, where I’d planned to go to her book signing. Unfortunately, I didn’t quite like it.
The story is nice and light and could make for a good Christmas movie, but it’s pretty hollow and I couldn’t get past various flaws. First of all, the first part is really long and boring for my taste, with 200 pages focusing on the main character’s workplace. I think 50 pages would have been more than enough to set the scene for the story, without having to involve us in her meetings and other office projects. After that, the protagonist is very childish, completely oblivious to everything and reacting like a pre-adolescent, even though she’s supposed to be in her late twenties and have a high-level position in a New York company. I simply found her unbearable.
Facing her, we have an Aaron that everyone seems to rave about, but I’m sorry to say, he’s pretty creepy. Not only is he manipulative and controlling, but he justifies two years bordering on professional harassment on the grounds that he was impressed and uncomfortable around Catalina. I’m sorry, but we’re not in elementary school anymore. For me, “tough love” is not acceptable.
If you look at the conversations, the first fifty pages seem to be just repeating the same thing over and over again. It seems to me that Catalina spends 100 pages of the novel saying the same thing. As for the insertion of Spanish into the novel (which I read in its original English version), it was simply unbearable for me as a Spanish speaker. Catalina or a member of her family utters an ENTIRE sentence in Spanish, and then we get the FULL translation of the sentence in English. Since I speak both languages, I literally read the same thing several times in a row. Usually, novels insert one or two words sparingly, but here were whole pages of conversations in Spanish, with their translation following. For me, this was excessive, unnatural and disruptive to my reading.
It’s a shame, because the concept was nice and I think the book could have been enjoyable if it were 250 to 300 pages long, but not 468 pages. Honestly, there just isn’t enough going on to fill the novel. Things got a little livelier once Aaron and Catalina arrived in Spain, but then again, I was expecting funnier situations with her ex-boyfriend and her family. I can’t say that the book is catastrophic, I still managed to finish it, but I have strong reservations. It’s a shame, because I was on a roll with romance novels, but I spent so much time getting to the end of this novel that I need to put this genre aside for a while.

Quatrième de couverture : Catalina Martín est désespérée. Pour ne pas arriver seule au mariage de sa soeur – auquel assisteront son ex et sa fiancée -, elle a assuré à toute sa famille en Espagne qu’elle viendrait avec son petit ami américain. Sauf que celui-ci n’existe pas. Et voilà que ce qui n’était qu’un mensonge inoffensif est à présent hors de contrôle. Quatre semaines avant les festivités, elle ne voit aucune issue. C’est alors qu’Aaron Blackford, un collègue exaspérant, se propose pour le rôle. Plutôt mourir que de passer un week-end avec ce type aussi froid que l’hiver new-yorkais ! Pourtant, l’échéance se rapproche et Catalina doit se rendre à l’évidence : Aaron est sa seule chance de s’en tirer la tête haute.
Qu’est-ce que j’en ai pensé ?
J’ai pas mal de retard sur le blog après avoir accumulé des préparatifs de voyage et les voyages eux-mêmes ces dernières semaines. Parmi mes dernières lectures figure le premier roman d’Elena Armas. J’avais entendu des avis très bons tout comme des avis plus mitigés sur ce best-seller, mais je voulais me faire mon propre avis sur la question pour la venue de l’autrice à Barcelone, dont j’avais prévu d’aller à la dédicace. Malheureusement, ce n’est pas passé pour moi.
L’histoire est sympa et légère et pourrait faire un bon film de Noël, mais c’est assez creux et je n’ai pas réussi à passer outre divers défauts. Tout d’abord, la première partie est vraiment longue et ennuyeuse à mon goût, avec 200 pages axées sur le milieu de travail de l’héroïne. Je pense que 50 pages auraient largement suffi à poser le cadre de l’histoire, sans avoir besoin de nous plonger dans ses réunions et autres projets au bureau. Après cela, on a une héroïne très enfantine, elle est complètement à l’ouest, ne se rend compte de rien et a des réactions de pré-adolescente alors qu’elle est censée avoir presque la trentaine et un poste haut placé dans une entreprise de tech à New York. Je l’ai tout simplement trouvée insupportable.
Face à elle, nous avons un Aaron devant qui tout le monde semble s’extasier, mais je suis désolée de vous le dire, il est plutôt glauque. Non seulement il est manipulateur et contrôleur, mais il justifie deux ans à la limite de l’harcèlement professionnel sur le fait qu’il était impressionné et mal à l’aise face à Catalina. Je suis désolée mais on n’est plus à l’école primaire. Pour moi, « qui aime bien châtie bien » n’est pas acceptable.
Si l’on se penche sur les conversations, les cinquante premières pages ne semblent que reprendre encore et encore la même rengaine. J’ai l’impression que Catalina occupe 100 pages du roman à répéter la même chose. Quant à l’insertion de l’espagnol dans le roman (que j’ai lu en version originale, en anglais), c’était tout simplement insupportable pour moi en tant que locutrice espagnole. Catalina ou un membre de sa famille prononce une phrase ENTIÈRE en espagnol, puis on a la traduction COMPLÈTE de la phrase en anglais. Vu que je parle les deux langues, je lisais littéralement plusieurs fois d’affilée la même chose. D’habitude, les romans insèrent un ou deux mots avec parcimonie, mais il y avait là des pages entières de conversations en espagnol, avec leur traduction qui s’ensuivait. Pour moi, c’était excessif, peu naturel et dérangeant dans ma lecture.
C’est dommage car le concept était sympa et je pense que le livre aurait pu être agréable s’il faisait 250 à 300 pages, mais pas 704 pages. Sincèrement, il ne se passe pas assez de choses pour remplir le roman. Les choses ont été un peu plus animées une fois qu’Aaron et Catalina sont arrivés en Espagne, mais là encore, je m’attendais à des situations un peu plus cocasses avec son ex petit ami et sa famille. Je ne peux pas dire que le livre soit catastrophique, j’ai tout de même réussi à le terminer, mais j’ai de fortes réserves. C’est dommage, car j’étais dans une bonne passe avec la romance, mais j’ai passé tellement de temps à venir à bout de ce roman, que cela m’a poussée à la mettre de côté pour un moment.
