So, what did I think about this book?
First of all, I’d like to thank Amazon Crossing for sending me this book as a review copy. Young-Adult and Science-fiction being my two favorite genres, I absolutely didn’t hesitate.
I quickly got interested by Kricket and her life in Chicago that sadly disappeared too quickly, which meant that the friends we had been introduced to earlier in the novel disappeared without a trace. I liked this strong, independent and full of sarcasm who has everything of a real heroine. The only problem is that she is very cliché too: she is an orphan – incredibly beautiful by the way, like too many times in young-adult literature – she has an extraordinary destiny and everything seems to be about her.
The main positive point in this first book is the rich universe we are introduced to. A new world, new creatures, traditions, clans, and even human beings who are a bit different from us: Etharians. It is a shame that the universe isn’t explored enough and leaves us with so little information. We know a war is on its way even before knowing well the different clans and what is at stake in this war. Also, particular words are used in this novel and I would have loved for some of them to be better explained to us.
The novel is full of action and I can promise you that you will not be bored when reading Kricket’s numerous adventures. However, the novel has a flaw that really bothered me : lots and lot of beautiful guys around Kricket. You will quickly notice the lack of other feminine characters and I couldn’t help but notice the many guys (in powerful positions on top of that) who never stop flirting with her between the three Rafe guys who came for Kricket on earth, the three guys from the opposite clan who also came for her, the Regent, all the guys from the Court, etc. and this seriously annoyed me. The love stories quickly take too much importance in the novel, at the cost of the science-fiction aspect of the novel which was what had appealed to me.
The writing is rather good, the plot original, the universe rich and interesting, but this first book lacks of depth in my opinion and didn’t make me want to desperately start the second book right away. If you like discovering new universes and you’re into love stories, do not hesitate to give this book a go!

À l’approche de son dix-huitième anniversaire, elle n’a qu’un seul désir : cesser de fuir et trouver enfin sa place dans le monde. Ce jour finit par arriver lorsqu’elle rencontre Trey Allairis, un jeune soldat étharien qui a pour mission de venir chercher l’orpheline sur Terre et la ramener sur sa planète d’origine. Quand le danger se rapproche, Trey doit protéger Kricket jusqu’à ce qu’elle ait appris à manier les pouvoirs qu’elle ne pouvait utiliser sur Terre. Kyon, qui revendique Kricket comme membre de son clan, connaît la puissance des dons surnaturels qu’elle possède, des dons qu’il compte bien utiliser à son avantage afin de s’imposer à la tête des factions qui cherchent à régner sur Éthar, et d’anéantir tous ses ennemis, à commencer par Trey Allairis lui-même. Kricket devra alors faire face au dilemme le plus déchirant de son existence : lutter pour sa survie ou se battre pour sauver son amour.
Qu’est-ce que j’en ai pensé ?
Tout d’abord, je tiens à remercier les éditions Amazon Crossing qui m’ont gentiment proposé de chroniquer ce livre, que j’ai lu avec grand plaisir. Le Young-Adult et la science-fiction sont mes deux genres préférés, ce qui fait que je n’ai pas hésité une minute.
Je me suis rapidement intéressée à Kricket et à sa vie à Chicago qui a malheureusement disparu trop rapidement, ce qui fait que ses amis qui nous sont présentés au début du roman disparaissent bien vite sans laisser de trace. J’ai apprécié ce personnage fort, indépendant et plein de sarcasme qui a tout d’une véritable héroïne bien qu’il n’échappe pas aux clichés : orpheline – et magnifique, comme trop souvent dans la littérature young-adult – elle est appelée à un destin tout particulier et l’univers semble tourner autour d’elle.
Le grand point fort de ce premier tome, c’est l’univers riche auquel nous sommes introduits. Un monde nouveau, des créatures nouvelles, des traditions, des clans, et même des êtres humains un peu différents de nous-mêmes : les Ethariens. Quel dommage que cet univers ne soit pas davantage exploré et nous laisse finalement avec si peu d’explications ! On sait qu’une guerre se prépare avant même de connaître correctement les différents clans et les enjeux de cette guerre. Egalement, un vocabulaire bien particulier est employé tout au long du roman et j’aurais apprécié que certains termes soient davantage expliqués.
Le roman est plein d’action et je peux vous promettre que vous ne risquez pas de vous ennuyer en lisant les nombreuses péripéties de Kricket. En revanche, le roman a un défaut qui m’a gênée dans ma lecture : tout un défilé de beaux garçons qui tournent autour de Kricket. On note très vite l’absence d’autres personnages féminins mais on ne peut que remarquer les très nombreux garçons (hauts placés en plus de cela) qui ne cessent de lui faire des avances entre les trois garçons Rafe qui sont venus chercher Kricket sur terre, les trois garçons du clan opposé qui sont également venus la chercher, le Régent, sans compter tous les hommes de la Cour, etc. cela m’a vraiment agacée. Les histoires d’amour prennent très rapidement une place trop importante dans le roman, au détriment du côté science-fiction qui m’attirait davantage.
L’écriture est plutôt bonne, l’histoire originale, l’univers riche et intéressant, mais ce premier tome manque de profondeur à mon goût et ne m’a pas laissée sur une envie irrépressible d’enchaîner immédiatement avec la suite. Si vous aimez découvrir de nouveaux univers et que le côté fleur bleue peut vous plaire, n’hésitez pas à donner sa chance à ce premier tome !
