REVIEW – CRITIQUE : CARAVAL, 3 (Finale)

 

I’ll write first in English. and then in French It’s not a translation, I am just writing first in French and then in English, so it can’t be exactly the same. This is about the last book of a series and it might contain spoilers about the previous books. (Première partie en anglais, deuxième partie en français, descendez un peu. Caraval, book 3: Finale

So, what did I think about this book?

I am a bit annoyed with this review because I have two very different opinions regarding two parts of the book. If I could only rate the first part of the novel, I would barely give it three stars. However, if I were to give my opinion only about the second part of the novel, I would give it five stars!

I was quite disappointed with the second book, and the beginning of the third one was very similar. I was bored and I didn’t manage to really engage with the plot. I was glad to see that Scarlett was the co-narrator of the story, but she didn’t manage to go back to being a protagonist. Until half the novel, she was only a supporting character and her sister was a lot more important.

Now that we know who Legend is, there is a lot less mystery in the story, and the third book felt less interesting due to this. At about half of the novel, there were some new plot twists that managed the story to life. Scarlett managed to get back to the core of the story and the reader is confronted with difficult choices, those impossible choices that I enjoyed so much in the first book.

The second part of the story deals with different topics that I thought were fascinating, such as love, lust for power and sacrifice. What are you willing to sacrifice for love? What are you willing to sacrifice to love? On the one hand, there is Scarlett. To save her life and Julian’s she may have to become immortal and therefore sacrifice her feelings, the very reason she might sacrifice herself. On the other hand, there is Legend. To love, he may be forced to sacrifice his immortality. But is that really what the people who love him want, when this could mean his death?

I really enjoyed being faced with these ethical dilemmas. I really enjoyed the way the book ended, even though I feel that Jacks didn’t have the role he deserved in that story, and some characters disappeared way too easily, such as Scarlett and Tella’s father who didn’t show up since the first book, or Scarlett’s fiancé who remains in the background when he could have brought something interesting to the story.

In short, I didn’t like everything about this novel, but I am glad that the second part was really good and that I am leaving Stephanie Garber’s magical world on a high note. Still, the first book will remain my favorite. I also wanted to say that the cover is gorgeous, even below the dust jacket, and it is probably one of the most beautiful hardcovers on my shelves.

Qu’est-ce que j’en ai pensé ?

Je suis un peu embêtée sur cette chronique car j’ai deux opinions tout à fait différentes sur deux parties du livre. Si je ne devais noter que la première moitié du roman, ma note aurait été à peine la moyenne. En revanche, si je ne devais noter que la deuxième moitié du roman, ce serait certainement cinq étoiles !

J’avais été un peu déçue par le tome deux, et le début du troisième tome y était très similaire. Je m’ennuyais un peu et je ne parvenais pas vraiment à accrocher complètement au récit. J’ai apprécié retrouver Scarlett en tant que co-narratrice de l’histoire, mais elle ne parvenait pas vraiment à reprendre sa place de personnage principal. Jusqu’à la moitié du récit, elle restait simplement au second plan et sa sœur occupait le devant de la scène.

Maintenant que l’on sait qui est Légende, il y a beaucoup moins de mystère dans l’histoire, et le tome trois me semblait moins intéressant pour cette raison. Vers le milieu du récit, il y a eu de nouveaux rebondissements qui ont véritablement donné vie à l’histoire. Scarlett a su reprendre sa place et le lecteur se retrouve face à plusieurs choix compliqués, ces choix impossibles qui me plaisaient tant dans le premier tome.

La deuxième partie du roman explore plusieurs idées que j’ai trouvé fascinantes quant à l’amour, la quête de pouvoir et le sacrifice. Qu’est-on prêt à sacrifier par amour ? Qu’est-on prêt à sacrifier pour aimer ? D’un côté, on a Scarlett qui, pour sauver sa vie et celle de Julian, devra peut-être devenir immortelle, mais par conséquent renoncer à ses sentiments, oubliant la raison de son sacrifice. De l’autre, on a Légende qui, pour pouvoir aimer, va peut-être devoir renoncer à son immortalité. Mais est-ce vraiment ce que désirent ceux qui l’aiment quand cela pourrait entraîner sa mort ?

J’ai beaucoup apprécié me retrouver face à ces dilemmes d’ordre moral. J’ai bien apprécié la fin, même si je trouve que Jacks n’a pas la place qu’il mérite dans ce récit, et que certains personnages ont disparu bien vite, comme le père et Tella et Scarlett qui n’a pas refait d’apparition depuis le tome un, ou le fiancé de Scarlett qui n’a qu’un rôle de figurant alors qu’il aurait pu apporter quelque chose d’intéressant à l’histoire.

En bref, je n’ai pas été emballée par tout ce roman, mais heureusement, la deuxième moitié a rattrapé le tout et je quitte l’univers magique de Stephanie Garber sur une bonne note. Je garde quand même un petit coup de cœur pour le premier tome. Je trouve dans tous les cas qu’il est bien dommage que la maison d’édition ait décidé de ne pas publier la fin de la saga. Je suis bien contente de l’avoir lue en anglais, le troisième tome étant en plus absolument magnifique.
