Review – Critique: Burn for Burn (Le Pacte tome 1)

Book description: Postcard-perfect Jar Island is home to charming tourist shops, pristine beaches, amazing oceanfront homes—and three girls secretly plotting revenge. So, what did I think about this book?

After all the dystopian and the fantasy novels I had read recently I really needed a book set in the real world without any districts or any supernatural events. Burn for Burn was exactly the book I needed. I wanted a great high school story without the main character falling in love with a vampire, a werewolf, or meeting wizards, dark creatures or anything like that. This amazing book following the story of three girls in high school was the perfect book to start summer. It reminded me of when I read the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants that summer when I was twelve – though the story has nothing in common with it. The thing is that every chapter follows a girl and she becomes the narrator. Sometimes it is a bit confusing, especially at the beginning of the book when you don’t know very well the characters, because you don’t always remember who is talking and I have needed to check the title of the chapter a few times to remind me who was talking. This way of telling the story is a great idea for this book which follows the real American high school life and all its rules. Criticizing how hard it is to fit in and to follow these rules. Every chapter will show you a part of this world thanks to the changes of narrators, from the most popular cheerleader in high school to the new girl who hasn’t met anyone at school yet. I loved going through the actual school year in details, with the football games, Homecoming, the votes and everything.

I was a bit scared at first to see that there were two authors because I thought I would see changes in the writing but I didn’t notice anything wrong and I thought they led the story very well together. The reason that made me buy this book was because last year I had seen a lot of good reviews on blogs and I had read a few extracts from the French book. I decided to buy it in English because it was much cheaper. The cover is absolutely gorgeous. The book is as great as its cover. Lillia, Mary and Kat want revenge on three different people and they have their reasons. But you can’t stop reading because you need to know how they are going to take revenge and you absolutely need to know their reasons. The authors were very intelligent not to tell us at the beginning why they want revenge. You will have to wait a while before knowing everything about the past.

When I bought it I had no idea it was part of a series and I’ve bought too many books by now to buy the second book so I will have to wait. But I have to admit it is really hard to wait because there is no end to the story. You need to know what happens next. And that’s what makes it a good book.

I’ve just moved to Madrid yesterday so now I’m going to start reading Spanish books to improve the language! Hope you will like them. I have no idea what they’re like. I mostly bought young-adult books.

Le Pacte, tome 1 : Vengeance

Résumé: Les filles ne pleurent pas… elles se vengent. Lillia n’avait jamais eu de problème avec les garçons, jusqu’à ce fameux été quand l’un d’entre eux a voulu aller trop loin. Kat est insultée et humiliée, elle est l’objet de ragots à cause de son ex. Mary a dû quitter l’endroit où elle vivait à cause d’un garçon. Trois jeunes filles très différentes veulent la même chose : se venger. Si elles agissent seules, elles risquent d’être soupçonnées mais ensemble, elles n’attireront pas l’attention.

Qu’est-ce que j’en ai pensé ?

Après tous les romans dystopiens et fantastiques que j’avais lus récemment j’avais vraiment besoin d’un livre qui se déroulait dans le monde réel sans aucun district ou évènement surnaturel. Vengeance était exactement le livre dont j’avais besoin. J’avais envie d’une bonne histoire de lycée sans une héroïne qui tomberait amoureuse d’un vampire, d’un loup-garou, ou qui trainerait avec des sorciers, des créatures sombres ou n’importe quoi du genre et ce livre génial, qui suit l’histoire de trois filles au lycée, était le livre parfait pour commencer l’été. Il m’a rappelé l’été où j’avais lu les Quatre Filles et un Jean quand j’avais douze ans (même si l’histoire n’a rien à voir). Le truc c’est que chaque chapitre suit une fille et elle devient la narratrice. Parfois c’est un peu perturbant, surtout au début quand on ne connait pas bien les personnages, car on ne se rappelle pas toujours qui parle et j’ai eu besoin de vérifier les titres des chapitres à plusieurs reprises pour me rappeler qui parlait. Cette manière de raconter l’histoire est une excellente idée pour ce livre qui suit la véritable vie des lycées américains et toutes ses règles. Ce livre qui critique à quel point il est difficile de s’intégrer et de suivre les règles. Chaque chapitre vous dévoilera une partie de ce monde grâce aux changements de narratrices, de la pom-pom girl la plus populaire du lycée à la nouvelle qui n’a encore rencontré personne. J’ai aimé suivre le véritable rythme scolaire en détail, avec les matchs de foot, Homecoming, les votes et tout ça.

Au début j’avais un peu peur en voyant qu’il y avait deux auteures car je pensais voir des changements dans l’écriture mais je n’ai rien remarqué et j’ai trouvé qu’elles menaient très bien l’histoire toutes les deux. La raison qui m’a poussée à acheter ce livre, c’était les bonnes critiques nombreuses que j’ai vu l’année dernière sur plusieurs blogs et puis j’avais lu quelques extraits en français. J’ai décidé de l’acheter en anglais car il était beaucoup moins cher. La couverture est magnifique. Le livre est aussi bien que sa couverture. Lillia, Mary et Kat veulent se venger sur trois différentes personnes et elles ont leurs raisons. On ne peut s’arrêter de lire car on a envie de savoir comment elles vont se venger. Les auteures ont été très intelligentes en ne dévoilant pas dès le début les raisons de leur désir de vengeance. Il va falloir bien avancer dans le livre pour tout découvrir sur le passé.

Lorsque je l’ai acheté je n’avais pas la moindre idée qu’il faisait partie d’une saga et j’ai acheté bien trop de livres pour l’instant pour m’acheter le deuxième tome alors je vais devoir attendre. Mais je dois admettre qu’il est très difficile d’attendre car il n’y a pas de fin à l’histoire. On a besoin de savoir ce qui se passe ensuite. Et c’est ce qui en fait un bon livre.

J’ai déménagé à Madrid hier et je vais désormais me lancer dans la lecture espagnole pour m’améliorer. J’espère que vous allez aimer les livres. Je n’ai pas la moindre idée de s’ils sont biens ou non. Je peux seulement vous dire que j’ai surtout acheté des livres young-adult.
